I first saw Yasmari perform at Centre Music House’s open mic back in early June. Nearly three months later, I still can’t get her song out of my head.
With her youthfully sweet but quietly devastating lyrics, it was the kind of performance that lingers.
She was so good.
Her soulful verses and understated acoustic guitar were so raw and sincere it felt a bit like we were reading her diary — that universal ache of first heartbreak, longing for someone who doesn’t love you back.
As the song ended, my mother and a few others in the crowd began asking each other if they'd heard correctly that this was an original song. We all wanted to know more.
So, at the risk of looking like a stalker, I introduced myself and mentioned my blog...
The Centre Music House performance in Framingham was Yasmari Rosa’s first-ever open mic. Since that night in early June, she’s performed at two other Massachusetts’ open mics — the Sterling Town Hall and Lockheart Restaurant in Wellesley (as shown in the video clip above).
At 17, Yasmari is home schooled, heading into her senior year, and also attending Middlesex Community College’s condensed program to earn her associate's degree on an accelerated level.
She’s always loved music, participating in school plays and Lincoln/Sudbury’s competitive a cappella program, but she’s never performed solo until this June.
Yasmari began writing because she knew as an aspiring songwriter she needed to start the process on her own. Inspired by her recent discovery of singer/songwriter Joshua Bassett, and dealing with the “really confusing, big emotions of falling for a guy who fell for my best friend” (the boy and her friend weren't aware how Yasmari felt), she used her songwriting skills to help work through these difficult feelings. She wrote "Daydreaming" (an embellished take on these real-life experiences) about a month before the June open mic, and on a whim worked up the courage to try it out when she saw the announcement for the local event.
Two open mics later — with more to come — the rest is history!
I’m so excited to follow Yasmari as she continues her songwriting journey. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
